Information for Artists

Registration

Please read our Terms and Conditions for participating artists so that you are fully aware of what’s involved in taking part the the Monflanquin Festival of Arts & Heritage.

Venues / Galleries

Commercants of Monflanquin (that make their own art objects) can be included in the printed progamme and other publicity free of charge. If you are a commercant, please register so that you will be included in the printed progamme and other publicity.

Permanent Monflanquin residents (that is those who pay local taxes in Monflanquin and/or are on the electoral roll) and students in full-time education will be charged a nominal fee of 10€ which helps towards the cost of publicity, signage, balloons etc.

Persons who do not own a property in Monflanquin and non-resident artists must pay the full registration fee. Artists from elsewhere are welcome to make their own arrangements to secure a venue for the duration of the Festival. All artists should apply using the registration form. We will do our best to match you with a venue if you have not arranged your own, although we always have a waiting list.

To summarise the fees:

Commercant making their own artistic objects with a shop in Monflanquin: Free

Resident of the commune of Monflanquin (your postal address ends "47150 MONFLANQUIN"): 10€

All other artists: 50€

If the committee allocate you a venue, please be aware that you may be asked to share a space with another artist. This is often preferred as it makes for an interesting exhibition and allows you to share the management of the venue.

There are a limited number of houses available as galleries and not all of them will be in ‘prime-position’, please be aware of this before you commit. Wherever you are located, we will do our best to add signposts but we encourage artists to make their own signs and to decorate their galleries so that they stand out.

The majority of ‘galleries’ will be in houses in the village and space may be limited. We ask that you make allowances for the nature of the village and the exhibition spaces that are still people’s homes. We will send you the name and contact number of the owner and from then on, the arrangement is a private arrangement between the artist and the venue owner.

Home owners who provide space in their house for a visiting artist usually do so free of charge. The Festival respectfully suggests the artist may wish to offer a payment or a gift as a way of thanking them for their generosity.

Publicity

The registration fee and sales of advertising in the programme help cover the costs of:

  • Printing of the progamme. In 2023 we gave the programme to visitors free of charge and we intend to do this again in 2024.
  • Printing and distributing flyers delivered to shops, cafes and restaurants in the local area and also distributed at regular markets in the weeks leading up to the event.
  • Each artist's venue is shown on a map in the progamme with a photo of their work. In 2023 we distributed many flyers and posters to local businesses.
  • Artists are also given an entry in the Festival website with the facility to add a small gallery of images of their work as well as contact details and social media links.
  • Signage for galleries and balloons to identify venues.
  • Any additional entertainment during the festival. In 2023 we provided a big band concert, a performance by a local duo and an African singer.
  • The event is promoted by the Festival's Facebook page, local tourist offices and national events directories.

Opening Times

It is expected that galleries will be open on the Friday preview evening from 19:00 - 20:30 and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 – 20:00 on each day with no lunch closure. Galleries are welcome to stay open longer if they wish.

Artists and venue owners are expected to arrange between them who will be on hand to man their show.

Hanging and Display

All artwork must be delivered to your nominated venue in good time for the preview evening.

It is the artist’s responsibility to agree with the venue how the work will be displayed and this must be discussed in advance. Most owners will not wish to have holes / nails / hooks put in their walls, so other ways of display should be agreed with the owner. Equipment for hanging is the responsibility of the artist. Access to the premises should also be arranged between artists and venue if the owners are not in residence.

Each work should be clearly labelled on the back with the name and address of the owner. A label (perhaps like a luggage tag) on the front should show the title, price and artists name. Please ensure this is visible when hung.

Sale of Artwork

On payment to the artist of cash, cheque or credit card, buyers can take the work away at any time. Their cheques should be made payable to the artist.

Artists must agree to donate 10% of the sale price to the Festival. This should be by bank transfer payment or a cheque made payable to ‘Les Amis de Monflanquin’ and either delivered to the Festival office at the end of the Festival or sent by post.

Unsold work must be collected at the end of the Festival. The Festival cannot take responsibility for uncollected work.

Insurance

Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. The Festival will have Public Liability Insurance to cover the event as a whole, but it will not cover the contents of a venue. If something gets broken in the property this will be the responsibility of the venue owner. Artists should arrange their own public liability insurance and insurance for their artworks. There is more about insurance in our FAQs.

Commission

Artists are required to donate 10% of their sales to the Festival. This helps to cover costs at this years festival and future festivals. Please pay your commission at the end of the Festival on Sunday to the Festival office in the Place des Arcades.

Resident's Preview Evening

Friday from 19:00 - 20:30. The preview evening is an important event as it launches the Festival in a convivial way. Artists and property owners are encouraged to send out invitations to clients friends, relatives, patrons and neighbours. If they wish to provide food and drink, so much the better, but there is no obligation. Artists please arrange your preview in conjunction with the property owner.
